At the beginning of my trip at the Grand Palace in Bangkok I saw this beautiful miniature of Angkor Wat, a place where I would end up only a couple of months later. Back in Bangkok I didn’t realise yet this was Angkor Wat.
When I was looking back at the pictures and showing them to my family it clicked and I realised that it was the temple where I just was a couple of weeks ago.
I wondered why there was a miniature of a famous Cambodian place in Thailand. A couple of Google searches later I figured out that during the reign of King Rama IV the old temple was almost rebuild again in another place. This vision of the king unfortunately turned out to be not feasible. So that is why he decided not to rebuild the whole thing again, but only a small miniature located at the Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand.
I thought this was a really interesting story how this piece of art came to be. It is quite interesting to me how people are inspired by past art and want to recreate it so more people can appreciate the beauty.
